Japanese Curry Recipe

Got finished my fifth day of jury duty earlier this evening. Can't talk about the case. I can talk about—what else?—Japanese curry.

I had one package of boil-in-bag curry left from a New Year's Eve curry shopping spree. Yongfook.com is right: This is wrong. I already knew that, but when you're hungry and haven't gone grocery shopping, whattaya gonna do? This stuff will definitely not be among the curries I try in my upcoming, at-some-point-in-the-not-too-distant-future Curry-a-Thon. The boil-in-bag variety has an acrid metallic aftertaste that makes it almost impossible to eat.

This is curry sauce in its most perverted form, which got me thinking: If this stuff is nasty, and even if the stuff from a box is full of things you might rather not consume, what about making it from scratch? A quick search turned up a recipe on Chowhound: Japanese Curry from Scratch.

Good news, you might think, but beware: It will take several days to make. Which means it'll have to wait until after I finish with jury duty.

Aw, was it that bad? ...Okay, maybe I don't want to know. I've eaten the "boil in the bag" curry loads of times, but I've never actually boiled it in the bag. I mean, I'd dump it out and heat it since for some reason I didn't like the idea of cooking it in the bag. Anyhoo, I might be the wrong person to comment on it considering I'll eat just about any kind of curry. Also, I might be a nontaster, in which case I wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyway.

How do you like jury duty? It's kind of funny, but I served on a Manhattan grand jury a couple months ago and I had an awesome time, I still keep in contact with the jurors that sat around me. Too bad I have to wait 8 more years to do it again!

Gerald: The magistrate judge who oversaw our jury selection said something to the effect of "Many of you are probably grumbling about being here, and many of you don't want to get picked. But I assure you, you will find that it's a rich and rewarding experience." And it actually was. Our jury was pretty good, and for all the disagreement on issues, no one ever resorted to ad hominem attacks or belittlement, which is what I envisioned happening. Although I felt sorry for the defendant (he had a very minor role in a drug smuggling scheme), looking at the letter of the law and the instructions we had as to our findings, I think we came to the proper decision on the charges. We took our time deliberating and considered all the counts in the indictment without any kind of "Let's just agree to get outta here type stuff." Well ... there was a bit of compromise on some minor stuff, but in that case, we gave the defendant the benefit of the (reasonable) doubt. It was interesting, there were people in the jury from all walks of life, and it gave me new insight into the justice system. I really liked it. And, hell, it sure beat going to work for the week or so I served.
